The origin of sales dates back to the 1930s, when the world was facing one of the worst economic crises in history: the Great Depression. Some of the most important companies in the United States, such as Abraham & Straus, Filene’s, F&R Lazarus & Co, OH, and Bloomingdale’s, decided to join forces to create a business group called Federated Department Stores Inc., which is now known as Macy’s. This group was the pioneer in introducing seasonal clearance sales. These consisted of offering products that had not sold during the season at greatly reduced prices to make room for the new collection. This idea was so successful that it soon spread across the country and around the world.
The first sales arrived in Spain on January 2, 1940, thanks to some merchants from companies such as Galerías Preciados and El Corte Inglés, who had traveled to the United States and had seen the impact they had on the public. However, it was not until 1975 that this practice was legally regulated, establishing two periods per year: January-February and July-August. Since then, sales have become a deeply rooted tradition in Spanish culture, generating great anticipation as people can acquire a wide variety of products at greatly reduced prices.
